Real Draft for the NBA 08-09 season (1st 2 Rounds)

Posted by Ed on Monday, September 22, 2008

Three weeks ago we had our annual keeper league draft and it was early for the reason that one of our friends had to leave the country and won't be able to draft live. It went well, as far as the other teams are concerned. As for my team (Ongai), I really don't think so.

The rules:
There were 14 managers with 13 players each. We had to keep two of our best players for this year while the rest would be thrown back into the pool to be drafted. We play Yahoo! Fantasy Basketball so we use their standard rules (PG, SG, G, SF, F, PF, C, C, Util, Util, Bench, Bench, Bench) and follow their head to head rules (FG%, FT%, Pts, 3s, Rebs, Assts, Steals, Blocks, TO)

So our draft went like this..For the first round we had a lottery of the previous 8 teams that were in the bottom last year (ex: last place gets 8 ping pong balls and has 8 out of 36 chances (8+7+6+5+4+3+2+1) to get 1st place while the top 6 had a reverse order in drafting just like how the NBA does it. As for the 2nd round, this is where it gets tricky and a little confusing. We did a lottery again and regardless of what place you were last year, you only had one ping pong ball. I ended up getting 4th pick in the 1st round (3rd round technically) and 13th pick in the 2nd round. For the succeeding rounds, we did a snake draft.

My two keepers (in bold) are Gilbert Arenas and Al Jefferson. We drafted a little too early and had I known that Gilbert would be out for at least a month then I might have just kept another player (Gerald Wallace/Lamarcus Aldridge/Mike Miller) but that's a BIG might there. Gilbert Arenas, despite him not playing (again!) for at least a month is still a third rounder and once he comes back I just hope he steps his game up since he has been in my bench for a year now.

On Kobe and Wade on the same team:
That happened in a trade early last year where Seann sent Okafor, AK and another good player to Sim's team for Wade since there was news that Wade could miss quite some time. It worked well for Seann as he has one of the strongest, if not the strongest, keepers in our league.

On having Josh Howard and Paul Pierce as keepers
Oinkguard didn't really have a lot of options for his keepers. Having traded Yao Ming to Sim's team (yep! he is active in trading) for Josh Howard and another good player, Oinkguard set himself up for one of the weakest top 2 keepers in my opinion. Why the trade? He was trying to make the playoffs last year and he made it but with Yao injured for the rest of the season he had to have players that would play in the playoffs. It was a gamble he took and it was a good one but it didn't give him, again, many options for players to be kept.

I'll be posting the picks for the next rounds in my next post so you might want to subscribe in hopes of helping you have a better understanding of where players got drafted for this year.
